Pain Colors How We Think God Paints

Past hurt creates stories of what we think about God — and how we think He sees us.

Shocking events create space to wonder if God is really trustworthy. Doubt is injected where security once sat.

Usually when we start to notice this shift of anger or hesitancy toward God, fear hops in the drivers seat.

With fear driving, we either:
1. avoid those surprising thoughts and pretend nothing has changed with God (guilty).
2. panic that doubt-filled thoughts are present (also guilty).
3. decide God isn’t who He said He was and reject faith (yup, also me).

Which response do you tend to lean toward?

Friend, when life blindsides you, you’re allowed to ask God big questions like:
❓do you even care about me?
❓I don’t understand how you could let this happen, where were you??
❓are you really good??? cuz you don’t seem like it right now.

You don’t have to ‘just believe’ or ‘just trust God’. He’s a Living God who doesn’t expect anything from you. His desire is honest, authentic relationship with you.

Instead of talking AT Him, you can talk TO Him. You can share your feelings about Him with Him… and then wait and listen for what He wants to tell you.

This ☝🏽 is the single most powerful (and courageous) two-way conversation I have had when the heartbreak of life interrupts my trust with God.

But it often requires a hefty dose of humility. Because when I’m hurt, I can struggle to see where He was all along. And anger and confusion are two things that lead me to pride — not humility.

➡️ We’re sure to watch our trust diminish when we avoid this conversation.
🗣️We’re sure to let pain change how we see God when we talk at Him.
🧡We’re sure to miss His heart for us if we’re not willing to listen.

Yes, our history of pain colors how we think God paints our story…
But honesty with God adds never-before-seen splashes of color to how we think He paints our story.

He’s not going to leave us in pain, because He’s a loving Dad.

What is an honest feeling you have about God right now?
Tell Him about it.

Then ask Him this: God… how do you feel about me?
