How do emotions feel in my body?

When it comes to unpacking emotions it can feel like standing at the foot of the mountain. You know the only (healthy) way through, is over, but it’s going to take so. much. work. It will require some serious cardio and you’re vastly underprepared for this moment (AKA learning a new skill you haven’t practiced much).

So stay with me for a moment. Let’s just touch our toe to this mountain and start with some basics.

What is emotional awareness?

Emotion awareness is recognizing what you’re feeling. From here, you can learn how to manage and maintain your emotions in ways that breed more intimacy with yourself and others.

Think: more thoughtful choices, less unknown or overwhelm.

When I first began this work for myself, was when a tense, tingly feeling made it’s home between my shoulder blades and wouldn’t leave. It took over my body and consumed my mind.

My initial thoughts were:

  • *Panic*. What if this never goes away??

  • I’m scared the reason this is stuck will take a long time to unravel and I’d rather avoid that.

  • Is this anxiety?

I would have told you before this moment, I was not someone who experienced anxiety 🙃  The truth is, this was the first time I was desperate to discover what I was feeling, so that I could make it stop. The more I tried to stuff down the feeling and panic about how long it would stay, the longer it stuck around 🫠

I didn’t plan to get in tune with my body, it’s just where the journey of emotional healing led me.

Emotional awareness begins in the body. The body knows what you’re feeling before you can think it or even feel it emotionally. It has signals it sends, each telling a unique story, tailored to your body and your perception of an experience.

I feel anxiety between my shoulder blades in a tingly tension.

Fear washes over me in a frozen way that feels hot, starting in my head.

Joy makes me bouncy and antsy with a light feeling in my chest.

Stress makes the back of my neck tighten with a hot, needle prick feeling.

It may not be the same for you. Discovering how each emotion showed up in my body took years of paying attention to patterns – and I’m stilllll learning! You can too.

Is body awareness new for you just as it was for me? 👇🏽

In order to build more body awareness, start with what you know.

How do you know you’re hungry? When you need to use the restroom? When you’re thirsty?

Those are body sensations you are already aware of because they’re essential to your survival.

But what about when you get in front of a crowd to speak. A common feeling here is anxiety. You know this because, your hands get sweaty or your face feels hot. What happens to you when you have to say something in front of a group of people?

How about when you’re with a group of people that you feel safe with your body is relaxed, and your words come out easier, what’s present in your body then?

It often takes a moment of slowing down and reflecting to begin building this kind of awareness.

You’ll know it’s time to slow down and reflect because we are more tuned into uncomfortable sensations and the reactions we’re not proud of. This is a simple reminder to pause and feel how your body is responding.

Try this right now, think about one emotion that you have felt recently. How did you know you were experiencing that feeling aside from what your mind is saying? What was your body doing and feeling that clued you into what was happening?

See? You already know some of this! I know we were just going to touch our toe to the mountain, but to me, it looks like you have two feet there now 👀

Continue paying attention to AND naming the sensations you currently have awareness for. One consistent step at a time is how you build awareness!

When you know how emotions rise in your body, you can better identify what you’re feeling and communicate intentionally instead of reactively!

Pssttt…Diving into emotional awareness is a journey that often has you asking, “What now?”. You can certainly do this by yourself, but you don’t have to. I’d love to meet you where you’re at, book time with me 🙂
